The Script project is fortunate to partner with some of the most forward-thinking media and academic institutions in Africa.
Nasarawa State University
Nasarawa State University, Nigeria was the first academic institution to join with the Script project and has been a key partner since then, pioneering the approach of embedding science communication training into the curriculums of science and journalism courses. Makerere University
One of Africa’s oldest and most prestigious universities, Makerere University joined the Script project in late 2018 and since then has contributed extensive expertise and enthusiasm to the project. To date a number of the university’s lecturers have received training in how to teach science communication, and science communication content has been incorporated into a range of undergraduate courses. Moi University
Moi University is located in Eldoret, north-west of Nairobi, and was established as the second university in Kenya by an Act of Parliament in 1984. Since then, the university has grown rapidly, expanding its schools and student numbers and developing a strong Department of Communication Studies which delivers education in all aspects of journalism and communication. The Script project team is delighted to partner with Moi to deliver science communication training to students.
University of Dar es Salaam
The University of Dar es Salaam is the oldest and biggest public university in Tanzania. Situated on the western side of the city, it was established in 1970 through an Act of Parliament and now delivers a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses to its students. Through its partnership with the Script project, the university will deliver science communication training to a number of journalism and mass communication students, beginning in 2020.
Nation Media Group
Nation Media Group is the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa with operations in print, broadcast and digital media serving audiences in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. Nation has provided input on Script’s online journalist training resources and taken part in Script networking activities, as well as successfully delivering a mentorship program in 2019 to a number of Script online course graduates.
Vision Group
The Vision Group is a national multimedia organisation in Uganda, which publishes the New Vision newspaper, one of Uganda’s main English- language papers, in both print and online form. The group also owns a number of regional radio and TV stations. The group partnered with the Script project in late 2019 and will be working with the project to strengthen science-related output in its outlets.
Radio Nigeria
Radio Nigeria provided advice and expert comment on Script’s online course curriculum content and its staff have received bespoke training from the Script project team on how to report on science. In 2019, Radio Nigeria mentored a number of Script online course graduates, supporting them to broadcast science-based stories on the network. Radio Nigeria is a subsidiary of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Nigeria’s publicly funded radio broadcasting organisation.
The Conversation Africa
An independent, non-profit media organisation offering news, commentary and analysis, authored by academics and edited by journalists for the general public, The Conversation Africa has worked with the Script project on a number of activities so far, including participating in the project’s launch in 2018.
Alpha Galileo
In 2019 Script partnered with Alpha Galileo, an independent research news service that distributes research news to thousands of interested journalists across the globe. As part of a drive to encourage more African researchers to communicate their work, Alpha Galileo offered graduates of the Script Media Skills for Scientists online course the ability to use their research dissemination service for free, allowing scientists to deliver their research news directly to thousands of professional journalists across the globe at no cost to themselves.
